Background

The leading cause of blindness in the US among adults is AMD (Age-related Macular Degeneration). Monitoring of AMD is crucial for early treatment and sight saving, and current clinical methods are not effective.

Notal Vision developed an effective computerized visual field test for monitoring in clinic setting. I2D supported the complex conversion of the system to a home device for elderly patients to enable them to self monitor their AMD condition.

The challenge

The core challenge  was to design a user friendly, out of the box “plug and use” device for a non computer-literate elderly population. To achieve this goal I2D developed simple and effective solutions for every aspect of the device including a learn and training program by using the internal display to show videos.

The solution

Through intensive user testing and prototyping I2D developed a simple, intuitive and cost effective solution. An innovative head rest provides comfort and blocks surrounding light. It is adjustable, to fit users large and small, and the soft rubber frame provides space for users with glasses. The large base provides stability and houses the mouse.

Innovation

I2D developed an innovative head rest that provides comfort and blocks surrounding light. It is adjustable, to fit users large and small, and has a proprietary and intuitive mechanism to select the tested eye and block non-tested eye by rotating the optic head. The overall size was drastically reduced by using small displays and folding the optic path.

Design

The design is friendly and non medical to fit the home environment and folds into a compact unit when not in use.
