Mobitâ„¢ - Personal satellite distress beacon

Mobit is a Personal Locator Beacon that connects to a network of rescue satellites. PLB’s are widely used for outdoor adventures and allow relay of one’s location in emergency situations. Most PLB’s are large and as a result in emergency situations they might not be readily available.

Challenge

I2D’s goal was to develop a compact wristwatch configuration that would allow users to always wear it on their wrists. The challenge was to design an attractive “watch” packed with satellite communication technology, which included a 25 cm retractable antenna and a battery that lasts for 6 years.

Solution

The design of the Mobit is based on an angled watch face to make space for the large battery and antenna. The Antenna is a compact retractable metal strip.

Design

As a wristwatch the design must compete with sophisticated Luxury watches, such as Breitling, which are 20 times more expensive. It has a waterproofed titanium enclosure, with robust and prominent functional details to communicate the sophisticated rescue functions.
